Full Continuum of Care for Co-Occurring Disorders in Pennsylvania

Integrated Treatment For Co-Occurring Disorders

When addiction and mental health conditions exist together, treating one without the other rarely works. That is why so many people find themselves cycling through treatment programs that address the substance use but leave the underlying mental health struggles unresolved. At Gateway Rehab, we believe real, sustained recovery requires looking at the whole picture.

Our integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders is designed to do exactly that. Rather than addressing addiction and mental illness separately, our residential program treats them together, at the same time, by the same dedicated clinical team. This approach means patients receive more complete care and leave with a stronger foundation for sustained recovery.

Gateway Rehab (GRC) has been serving Pennsylvania and the surrounding region for decades, earning a reputation as a trusted, community-rooted treatment provider. Our co-occurring disorder program is part of our broader residential services, operating across our Abe's Place unit (male and female) and the REST Center, our co-ed Residential Enrichment and Skill-Building Treatment program. Both are located on our main campus and share the same skilled clinical staff, so patients benefit from a consistent, connected care experience from day one.

If you or a loved one is living with addiction alongside a mental health condition, you don’t have to navigate this alone. Contact Gateway Rehab today to request an appointment and take the first step toward treatment that works.

Mental Health Conditions We Treat Alongside Addiction

Co-Occurring Disorders We Support

Our integrated program is equipped to treat a wide range of mental health conditions alongside substance use disorder. Diagnoses we commonly work with include:

  • Major depression
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Schizophrenia

We also work with patients diagnosed with ADHD and traumatic brain injury on a case-by-case basis. If you are unsure whether your diagnosis is a fit for our program, our clinical team is happy to talk through your situation and help determine the right level of care.

A Daily Structure Built Around Stability and Progress

Five Groups a Day, One Consistent Clinical Team

The structure of our program is intentional. Each day includes five therapeutic and skill-building groups, creating a consistent rhythm that helps patients stabilize, focus, and make meaningful progress. Treatment also includes a patient-led recovery hour, giving each person dedicated time to journal, reflect, and center themselves in their own process. The schedule is active and purposeful without being overwhelming, and it mirrors the kind of routine that supports long-term success outside of treatment.

Safety is a core value across everything we do. Patients have described our program as a safety net, and that language resonates with our team. Many of the people who come to us have been living in reactive mode for a long time, managing crisis after crisis without a moment to breathe. Our program gives them the chance to finally rest, stabilize, and start building something sustainable.

Dedicated Clinical Support at Every Step

Your Treatment Team Is With You From Day One

Co-occurring disorder treatment requires more than group sessions. It requires a committed team that knows you, tracks your progress, and coordinates every dimension of your care. At Gateway Rehab, every patient is supported by a dedicated therapist who meets with them at least once per week for individual sessions, as well as a dedicated case manager who works alongside them throughout their stay.

Your case manager helps coordinate far more than what happens inside our walls. They assist with housing, community-based case management, medical care, continuing clinical care after discharge, and connection to supportive resources in your community. The goal is to make sure the work you do in treatment translates into a stable, supported life on the other side.

Our psychiatric team meets with each patient once a week to review medications, monitor mental health, and make clinical adjustments as needed. Dedicated nurses are present on the unit around the clock, providing medical oversight and administering Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR) for patients whose recovery plan includes it. This level of staffing is not standard everywhere, and it reflects Gateway Rehab's commitment to treating the full complexity of co-occurring disorders, not just the surface.

On-Site EMDR and Evidence-Based Therapies

Trauma-Informed Care That Goes Beyond the Basics

Trauma and addiction are deeply connected. Research consistently shows that unresolved trauma is one of the most significant drivers of substance use and relapse, which is why trauma-informed addiction treatment is not an optional add-on at Gateway Rehab. It is built into the foundation of how we work.

Our co-occurring disorder program offers on-site EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, one of the most clinically respected and widely requested trauma therapies available. EMDR helps patients process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge, making it possible to move forward without being continually pulled back by the past. It has strong evidence behind it for both PTSD and addiction recovery, and it is one of the most sought-after offerings in our program.

We also provide Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT, another evidence-based approach that helps patients examine and reframe the thoughts and beliefs that formed around traumatic experiences. Together, EMDR and CPT give our clinical team powerful, targeted tools to address the trauma that so often sits underneath co-occurring disorders.

Trauma-informed care goes beyond specific therapies, though. It shapes how our staff communicate with patients, how the unit environment is managed, and how every aspect of the program is delivered. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that safety, trust, and consistency are the conditions under which real healing becomes possible.

MAR and Mental Health Treatment Together Under One Roof

Medication Assisted Recovery as Part of Integrated Care

For many patients with co-occurring disorders, Medication Assisted Recovery (MAR) is an important part of the treatment journey. MAR uses FDA-approved medications to reduce cravings, manage withdrawal, and stabilize brain chemistry, creating a foundation from which patients can engage more fully in therapy and other parts of treatment.

At Gateway Rehab, MAR is not siloed from the rest of care. It is integrated into the broader treatment plan alongside therapy, psychiatric support, and case management, so the medical and clinical sides of recovery work in coordination rather than in parallel. Dedicated nurses on the unit administer and monitor medications throughout a patient's stay, and the psychiatric team is actively involved in evaluating and adjusting medication plans as treatment progresses.

This integration matters because co-occurring disorders create a complex web of needs. A patient managing both opioid use disorder and depression, for example, benefits from a team that is tracking both conditions simultaneously and communicating across disciplines. That is exactly how our program is structured.

Music Therapy, Adventure-Based Counseling, and More

Healing the Whole Person

Recovery is not only clinical work. It also involves reconnecting with yourself, rediscovering what brings you energy and meaning, and rebuilding the skills and confidence that addiction and mental illness can erode over time. Our co-occurring disorder program reflects that understanding through a range of complementary therapies and activities woven throughout the treatment experience.

Patients at Gateway Rehab have access to:

  • Adventure-based counseling a therapeutic approach that integrates experiential learning, group dynamics, and outdoor activities to promote personal growth, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. GRC is also a certified ropes course program, elevating the adventure-based experience for residential patients.
  • Art therapy and music therapy, which provide creative outlets for self-expression and help patients explore and process their emotions in a nonverbal way. These therapies are especially valuable for those who find it difficult to articulate what they are feeling but still need a safe space to process and heal.
  • A wellness program, including yoga, that encourages mindfulness, relaxation, and stress reduction as essential tools for long-term recovery.
  • An on-site boxing gym, giving patients a physical and mental health outlet to release emotional tension, build self-discipline, and develop a sense of empowerment through movement.
  • Therapy dogs who visit the unit regularly, offering patients a calming presence that can ease anxiety, lower stress, and provide comfort.
  • NA and AA speakers, DNR groups, and Bible study for patients who find community and faith to be important parts of their recovery.
  • Life skills development to prepare patients for the practical realities of daily life after treatment, from managing responsibilities to building routines that support sobriety and mental wellness.

Gateway Rehab has always adapted to the changing needs of the communities we serve, and our co-occurring disorder program reflects that commitment. If your needs change during treatment, our team adjusts with you.

When residential treatment is complete, patients can transition seamlessly into outpatient addiction treatment at one of our in-person locations or continue their care through telehealth. Throughout outpatient services, patients retain access to Gateway Rehab's psychiatric team for consistency and follow-up care, as well as continued support through our Medication Assisted Recovery program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between dual diagnosis vs. co-occurring disorders?

While the two terms are often used interchangeably, there is a clinical distinction worth understanding.

  • “Dual diagnosis” specifically refers to the coexistence of a serious mental illness and a substance use disorder.
  • “Co-occurring disorders” is a broader term that can refer to any combination of two or more mental health conditions, or a mental health disorder paired with a substance use disorder, happening at the same time.

In other words, all dual diagnoses involve co-occurring disorders, but not all co-occurring disorders would be classified as a dual diagnosis.

Will my mental health medications change during treatment?

They might. Our psychiatric team meets with patients weekly and actively monitors how medications are working throughout their stay. If something needs to be adjusted, added, or tapered, those decisions are made collaboratively and carefully. Coming into treatment on existing psychiatric medications does not disqualify you from our program, and our nursing staff is on the unit around the clock to provide continuity of care.

What happens after I leave the residential program?

Discharge planning starts well before you leave. Your case manager works with you throughout treatment to identify what you will need on the other side, whether that is outpatient care, community mental health support, housing assistance, or connection to peer recovery resources.

Gateway Rehab also offers outpatient addiction treatment and telehealth services, so continuing care with a provider who already knows your history is an option for many patients.
