Adolescent Q&A with Karen Pollard
Looking for professional insight on substance use among students? We asked our Adolescent Therapist, Karen Pollard, questions about substance use and adolescents!
Question 1: What are some signs that a student may be struggling with substance use?
Karen: “There can be a lot of signs, but you can see demotivation, grades declining, lack of attendance, or using a lot of excuses. Signs can show up in appearance, like dressing sloppy. Other signs can be a change in personality, losing friends, and changing friend groups. Anything that makes you think this does not sound like you; something is wrong here.”
Question 2: In your opinion, what is a good early intervention tool to use when approaching substance use behavior among a student?
Karen: “Education and awareness. Building awareness around their own choices and the personal consequences of the substance use. That is where I go with treatment. Anything that can draw awareness to their behavior and choices and where those choices can lead them. I also recommend an evaluation [for treatment]. When a student is caught using a substance, an action plan needs to be followed to handle substance use. The use will progress, and that is where we come in.”

Can teens benefit from early intervention?
Absolutely. Many teenagers (and adults) will try to convince their parents or caregivers that they can stop misusing substances or alcohol without any help, but research shows this is unlikely.
