Music icon Judy Collins to speak at Gateway Rehab annual gala
Sally Wiggin & Mike Clark, WTAE-TV news
anchors, to co-emcee
Pittsburgh— Gateway Rehabilitation
Center will present its annual Hope Has a Home gala on December 13
at the Hilton Pittsburgh to celebrate the work Gateway has done in the community
since 1972, work that has saved lives, mended families, and restored
communities. The event will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by
dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. Proceeds from the gala will benefit Gateway’s
youth programs.
Music icon Judy Collins, a woman whose voice has enthralled audiences for
four decades, is the featured speaker, and Sally Wiggin and Mike Clark, well
known WTAE-TV news anchors, are slated again this year as emcees for the
evening’s festivities.
Collins has recorded 37 albums, and numerous top ten hits, Grammy nominations,
and gold and platinum recordings; a consummate artist, Ms. Collins also is known
for her work with watercolors and as the author of a number of books.
But there is a tragic side to this Living Legend. A
recovering alcoholic, Ms. Collins—whose father also was a problem
drinker—suffered the loss of a son to suicide after struggling with alcohol and
drug abuse. Reflecting on these events, Ms. Collins has said, “No one talked
about the disease of addiction in my family.”
Today, Ms. Collins is more than willing to talk about this issue. She offers
solace in the face of grief and loss, and breaks down the barriers of
helplessness and secrecy to openly discuss the after effects of suicide. Ms.
Collins ends her powerful and emotional presentation by leading the audience in
singing “Amazing Grace.”
Carrying on the tradition of previous years’ events,
the 2006 gala will be inspiring and uplifting, and will help to raise awareness
about the disease of addiction, eradicate the stigma and denial that surround
it, and share the good news that treatment works.
Total proceeds from prior annual events exceeded $400,000 and were also
designated for support of Gateway’s youth programs.
Not-for-profit Gateway is western Pennsylvania’s premier provider of prevention
services and treatment for adults and youths with alcohol and other drug
problems. More than 90,000 individuals and their families have found help at
Gateway to escape the grip of addiction, in spite of the great denial in society
of its very existence. It is no small accomplishment, then, that Gateway is
recognized nationally as a leader in the field.
The cost to attend is $150 per person; $1,200 for a table of 8. Visit
