Allegheny Energy Manager of Safety and Health Receives

Gateway Rehab Center Recognition Award

Pittsburgh – Michael G. Phillips, general manager of safety and health at Allegheny Energy, Greensburg, received this year’s Gateway Rehabilitation Center Thank You award, given annually to an individual or individuals to recognize efforts to help those with addiction-related problems.  Phillips was recognized at the annual conference of drug and alcohol prevention and treatment professionals held recently at Gateway’s Center Township (Beaver County) location.

Gateway has been a provider of employee assistance program (EAP) services to Allegheny Energy employees and their family members since 1996 and Phillips played a key role in forging the alliance.  Through his efforts and with the support of management, many Allegheny Energy employees and their family members have benefited from the EAP.

Phillips was named to his current position in April 2005, following 15 months as general manager of safety, health, and training for Allegheny Energy Supply.  Through the late 1980s until 2003, Phillips held numerous positions at the company, including personnel representative, supervisor of personnel administration, staff advisor, supervisor of medical services, and manager of human resources supply.  He joined the company in 1977 as a laborer at the then West Penn Power Company’s Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station.

Prior to his joining Allegheny Energy, Phillips was a social worker for Greene County Child Welfare from 1974 to 1977.  He is a 1973 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.

Steve Roman, executive vice president of strategic management at Gateway, presented the Thank You award and said that Phillips has a “head for business and a heart for helping people.”  Roman also noted that Gateway has been very fortunate to partner with Allegheny Energy for many years to provide EAP services that Gateway’s mission calls it to pursue.

Gateway has been presenting the Thank You award since 1991.  Last year’s recipient was Dr. James Manley, superintendent of the Pine Richland School District.
