Paul Bacharach

President and Chief Executive Officer

Paul Bacharach joined Gateway Rehab in December 2013 as its President and Chief Executive Officer. In his position, Mr. Bacharach oversees all facets of the Gateway Rehab system, which has more than 20 locations throughout Western Pennsylvania and Ohio.  

Mr. Bacharach previously served as the President and CEO of Fayette Regional Health System/Uniontown Hospital.

In his previous capacity, Mr. Bacharach was responsible for the health system’s ability to maintain dominant market position in its region while advancing clinical services, infrastructure and financial stability. His association experience is extensive. Among his many leadership roles, Mr. Bacharach served as 2010-2011 Board Chair of the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the health system, Mr. Bacharach advanced progressively through hospital positions in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Ohio University.

 

 

Neil A. Capretto, D.O., D.F.A.S.A.M

Medical Director

Dr. Neil A. Capretto is Gateway Rehab’s Medical Director.

He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with qualifications in Addiction Psychiatry.  He is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

In 2012, he was named Psychiatrist of the Year by the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Dr. Capretto’s additional honors include “2009 Not-for-Profit Communicator of the Year” by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and he was among the first physicians in the United States to be certified and awarded diplomate status by the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

A graduate of Allegheny College and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Capretto went on to become the chief resident in psychiatry at St. Francis General Hospital.  Dr. Capretto has authored several scholarly articles and has given numerous presentations to a wide range of audiences on various topics relating to the disease of addiction. He is frequently consulted by the local press and has provided expert medical commentary for several national media outlets including the ABC and NBC network news, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, People, Women’s Health, Ladies' Home Journal and the Lifetime television network.

Dr. Capretto serves on the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Society of Addiction Medicine and he is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (he served on its Task Force on Addiction Medicine in the 21st Century). He is a member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.  In addition, Dr. Capretto is a professional advisory committee member for Al-Anon World Services Outreach.

 

 

 

Dave Sherman

Executive Vice President / Chief Financial Officer

Gateway Rehabilitation Center, with facilities in Pennsylvania and Ohio dedicated to a full continuum of substance-abuse treatment, appointed Mr. Sherman, who is a CPA, as its Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Finance, in July 2011.

Originally from New York, Mr. Sherman’s experience in guiding the financial needs of healthcare facilities is extensive. Before joining Gateway Rehab he served as Director of Finance for the West Penn Allegheny Health System. Mr. Sherman’s background also includes positions with University of Pittsburgh/University of Pittsburgh Physicians, Quorum Health Resources and Monsour Medical Center. Earlier in his career, Mr. Sherman was associated with the accounting firm Pannell, Kerr, Forster & Co. A graduate of Ithaca College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Mr. Sherman holds a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of Pittsburgh as well. He is a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

 

 

David Blenk

Executive Vice President / Corporate Planning & Business Development

As executive vice president of corporate planning and business development for Gateway Rehab, David Blenk is responsible for managing the organizational strategic planning process, defining and measuring best-practice program outcomes, implementing systems to strengthen facilities production and overseeing the administrative processes involved with entering the Gateway treatment system.

David earned a master’s degree in architecture with a specialization in planning and urban issues from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from The Pennsylvania State University.  He completed a program on negotiation taught by Harvard School of Business/ MIT Sloan School and is a field instructor for the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Social Work. David has previously served as a board member for the Oakland Transportation Management Association, Oakland Business Improvement District, and the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group. He is an active board member of the Community Human Services Corporation.  In addition, he is a member of the Pennsylvania Credit Union League Founders Club.

Carolyn Givens

Executive Vice President / Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers

Carolyn J. Givens is the executive vice president in charge of Gateway Rehab’s Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers. In this role, Ms. Givens is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for a continuum of services located at three sites within or near Youngstown, Ohio. Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers provides prevention, detox, and inpatient and outpatient services.

Before joining Gateway Rehab, Ms. Givens was the former executive director of the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation where she oversaw and was responsible for providing strategic leadership, financial development, building statewide alliances with legislative, policy and business leaders, as well as the daily operations of the foundation.

Prior to her role at the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation, Ms. Givens was director of the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. It was here that she served the cabinet-level department in a number of leadership roles throughout her 19 years of public service.

Ms. Givens is a graduate of Ohio Dominican University and Harvard University’s Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.

Ms. Givens is a member of the board of directors for the Ohio Council of Behavioral Health Care and Family Services Providers.

 

 

Carin J. Fraioli

Vice President / Operations

As vice president, Operations, Carin J. Fraioli is responsible for Evaluation Services, Care Coordination and overall management of Gateway Rehab’s main campus in Center Township, Pa., which accommodates 194 patients receiving detoxification and residential inpatient treatment.

 

Ms. Fraioli started her career at Gateway Rehab as an adolescent therapist. In her more than 17 years of addiction treatment experience with Gateway Rehab, Ms. Fraioli persistently undertook obligatory roles of increasingly more responsibility. Before her current role, Ms. Fraioli was director, Evaluation Services, where she led a team of evaluators across the Gateway Rehab system of care in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Ms. Fraioli was also a member of a select committee having the responsibility of choosing a new electronic medical record system for Gateway Rehab and, ultimately, she led the implementation of such.

 

Additionally, after the State of Pennsylvania chose Gateway Rehab in 2016 as an Opioid Use Disorder Center of Excellence (COE), Ms. Fraioli led the initial development of this initiative at Gateway Rehab, which increases the ability to coordinate care between physical, behavioral and addiction treatment providers for those seeking freedom from opioid use disorders. Under her continued leadership, the Gateway Rehab COE is on pace to exceed the State’s first-year expectations of care coordination.

 

Ms. Fraioli holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from West Virginia University and, from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Social Work. She is also a Certified Co-occurring Disorders Professional Diplomate (CCDPD) and a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in Pennsylvania.

 

Dr. Cara Renzelli

Vice President / Research & Training

Cara Renzelli, PhD, vice president of research and clinical training at Gateway Rehab, has over 20 years’ experience working in addiction treatment research.  Prior to joining Gateway in 2004, she worked and studied at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic where she specialized in the diagnostic assessment of children and adolescents.  

She earned her BA and M.S.Ed. from Duquesne University and her MSW and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.  

A published author, Dr. Renzelli presents her work regionally and nationally.   Her research has been funded by state government and local foundations.  She leads the Kenneth S. Ramsey, PhD Research and Training Institute at Gateway Rehab, and focuses her work on medication assisted treatment, treatment outcomes, and organizational innovation.
